Introduction
Celebrating a new baby, offering a quilt to a friend who is moving, decorating a bed: there are many excuses to make a quilt. I look for any occasion I can find.

My sister’s quilt
This is a quilt I made for my sister who was living in Henderson, Nevada at the time. The pattern, from Kaffe Fassett, is called Espania. But the fabrics are anything but. Henderson is a suburb of Las Vegas, which has one of the best quilting stores that I have ever visited. As befits Las Vegas, there is a preponderance of metallic, intense, brilliant fabrics in this quilt. I think that the overall effect is a bit glitzy (but not too, I hope.)

Bedspread
In our new home in Salem, our bedroom is a delight in open space and tall windows overlooking the woods. The overall effect is calm, serene, understated. I wanted to maintain that aura with a bedspread that would complement the purity of the space. To achieve that effect, I chose Japanese yarn dyed and printed taupes that give the room a very sparse, contemporary air. We find it very peaceful.

Garden through a Moroccan Gate
My wonderful Italian teacher was moving to teach at a university in another city. I made this quilt to celebrate our friendship. Since he is from Florence, I highlighted the color purple, the color of Florence’s soccer team. I wanted the fabrics to evoke a garden. For the overlaying stitching, I used a pattern that I had seen in the wrought iron gates in Morocco. I wanted to suggest looking at a garden through the gate.

Tote Bags
Quilting isn’t just for quilts anymore. I made these bags for friends who found very creative and individual uses for them. (lunch bag; cosmetic bag; notions bag ……you get the idea.)

Baby quilts
Joyful, playful, energetic, colorful. Those are my only guidelines in making these quilts. I eschew pink for girls, blue for boys. Everybody gets orange and frogs and birds and springs and foxes. Nature is wonderful. Let the babies have fun.
